Best Time to Visit Southeast Asia

7 min read Nov 30, 2025

Southeast Asia offers year-round travel, but timing your trip around weather patterns and local festivals makes a huge difference in your experience.

Southeast Asia is one of the world's most visited regions, and for good reason — extraordinary food, ancient temples, lush jungles, and stunning coastlines are all within a few hours of each other. But the region is large and climatically diverse, so the "best time to visit" depends heavily on which countries you plan to explore.

The broadest rule is this: Southeast Asia has two seasons — a dry season and a wet (or monsoon) season — and they don't align perfectly across the region. That's actually good news for travellers, because you can almost always find excellent weather somewhere.

Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos experience their dry season from November through April. This is peak tourist season, especially December through February when temperatures are comfortable and skies are clear. March and April can be very hot, particularly inland. The southwest monsoon arrives in May and brings heavy rain through October, though it rarely rains all day — mornings are often clear and rain falls in short afternoon downpours.

Vietnam is more complex because it spans a significant north-south distance. The south (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta) is drier from November to April. The central coast and Hoi An are best visited between February and May. The north (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay) has a cooler winter from November to April and is often misty — June through August is warmer and sees heavier rain.

Bali, Indonesia is best visited in the dry season from April through October. July and August are peak months with reliable sunshine, though they are also the most crowded and expensive. The wet season brings lush green landscapes and fewer tourists, but some outdoor activities become difficult.

The Philippines has more than 7,000 islands and weather patterns vary considerably. The dry season for most popular destinations — Palawan, Cebu, Boracay — runs from November to May. Typhoon season peaks between July and October, and some islands can become inaccessible.

For festival timing, Thailand's Songkran water festival in April and Yi Peng lantern festival in November in Chiang Mai are both extraordinary. Cambodia's Water Festival (Bon Om Touk) in November draws massive crowds to Phnom Penh.

Budget travellers should note that shoulder season — May and October in Thailand, for example — offers meaningful discounts on accommodation and fewer crowds at major sites, with weather that's usually acceptable despite occasional rain.

Whatever time you visit, pack light, breathable clothing, a rain jacket, and sun protection. Southeast Asia rewards relaxed, flexible travellers far more than rigid itineraries.
