About Cape Town

Cape Town occupies one of the most dramatically beautiful natural settings of any major city on Earth. Table Mountain — a flat-topped massif rising 1,086 meters above the city — forms a backdrop so distinctive that it served for centuries as a landmark for sailors rounding the Cape of Good Hope, the southernmost point of the African continent. The mountain is accessible by cable car or a strenuous two-hour hike, and the panoramic views from its summit extend across the Cape Peninsula, the Atlantic seaboard, and on clear days far out into the Southern Ocean. Below it, the city spreads across a bowl between mountain and sea in a landscape that has no parallel.

The Cape Winelands, just 45 minutes from the city center in the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek valleys, produce wines that compete with the world's finest — pinotage, chenin blanc, and Cape Blend reds — and the valley scenery of oak-lined avenues and Cape Dutch homesteads is spectacular in its own right. Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison, is one of the world's most powerful heritage sites and best visited with a former political prisoner as guide. The V&A Waterfront, Boulders Beach penguin colony, and the drive along Chapman's Peak above the crashing Atlantic complete the essential Cape Town itinerary.

November through March is the Southern Hemisphere summer — hot, dry, and ideal for beaches and outdoor activities. The Cape Doctor, a powerful south-easterly wind, blows strongly in December and January; Table Mountain's cable car frequently closes in strong wind, so build flexibility into plans to summit. June through August is rainy and cool but brings humpback whale sightings off the coast and dramatically lower accommodation prices. South Africa's water crisis has largely stabilized but conservation habits — short showers, minimal bath use — remain appreciated. The city is safe in tourist areas but standard urban precautions (no phones out in unfamiliar streets at night) apply firmly.
